How to Get a Gemini API Key
Google AI Studio hands out a free API key with a usable daily allowance and no card on file. For most people auditing their own site a few times a week, this never costs anything.
Step by step

Open Google AI Studio
Go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Accept the terms if prompted.

Open Get API key
Use the Get API key entry in the left navigation or the top bar.

Create the key
Choose Create API key and select an existing Google Cloud project or let Studio create one for you. Nothing else needs configuring.

Copy the key
Copy the value shown. Unlike some providers you can view it again later from the same screen.

Add it to GetSEO
Open the settings drawer, select Gemini, paste the key, save, and pick a Flash class model for fast audits or a Pro class model for deeper rewrites.
Open the settings drawer from the top bar, add the key, and it is saved in your browser only. You can add several keys and GetSEO will fail over between them automatically.
Worth knowing
- The free tier is limited per minute and per day; heavy batch auditing needs a billed project or a second key.
- Flash models are fast and cheap and handle scoring well; Pro models write better replacement copy.
- Free tier usage may be used by Google to improve products. Use a paid project or Ollama for confidential sites.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| API key not valid | The key belongs to a project without the Generative Language API enabled. Recreate it from AI Studio rather than the Cloud console. |
| Resource exhausted | Daily or per-minute free quota is spent. Wait for the reset or fail over to another key in the pool. |
| Blocked response | Safety filters occasionally block scraped page content. Rerun, or switch to another provider for that site. |
