Model guide
Best Free AI Models for SEO Audits
An audit model has two jobs: read messy page content without losing the thread, and write replacement copy a human would actually publish. Plenty of free models do the first. Fewer do the second.
Step by step
- 1
Groq hosted open weight models
The speed pick. Large Llama and Qwen instruct models run free within rate limits and finish a full report in seconds. Rewrites are solid if not poetic.
- 2
Google Gemini Flash
The balance pick. A generous free daily allowance, long context that swallows big pages whole, and reliable structured output.
- 3
OpenRouter free tier models
The variety pick. Several open weight models are free to call, which makes OpenRouter useful as a failover key even if it is not your primary.
- 4
Local models via Ollama
The privacy pick. No cost, no limits, no data leaving your machine. Stay at 7B or above; below that the recommendations get generic.
- 5
Paid mini models
When a report goes to a client, a few cents on a current mini reasoning model buys noticeably sharper prioritisation and copy.
Open the settings drawer from the top bar, add the key, and it is saved in your browser only. You can add several keys and GetSEO will fail over between them automatically.
Worth knowing
- Context length matters more than raw benchmark scores for audits, because whole pages get sent.
- Very small models score fine but write vague fixes, which defeats the purpose.
- Keep two providers configured so a rate limit never ends a run.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Recommendations feel generic | Move up a model class. Generic output is almost always model capacity, not the prompt. |
| Audit stops partway | You hit a free tier limit. Add a second key so failover can take over. |
| Long pages get truncated | Switch to a longer context model such as a Gemini Flash variant. |
